The news of Emperor Myeongseong is revisited and re-imagined in “The Sword with no Name”, from administrator Kim Yong Kyun (“Red Shoes”), centering on a romanticised relation with a fictional bodyguard. The Sword with no Name The Emperor has long been a fascinating and important amount in Korean history, existence famous for her status in persuasion and foreign affairs, and for her standing against Asian aggression, and so there is plenty of orbit for exploring her life in more detail. Kim not only does this, but also paints the picture of a land coming to terms with the changing modern world, as well as throwing in plenty of old fashioned romance and sword fighting duels.
The Sword with no Name is ordered in the Joseon court during the late nineteenth century, and revolves around the tale of a young woman called Ja Yeong (Soo Ae, “Sunny”), sure to become the Emperor Myeongseong. Before heading to her marriage with the King, she meets Moo Myeong (Cho Seung Woo, in his last persona before military service), a rough though friendly bodyguard who water deeply in fuck with her. Although their relation is brought to a halt by her close nuptials, Moo Myeong is determined to protect her, and enlists in the palace guard. The digit balance their fuck with politics, the needs of the country, and the changing times, which see Korea defining its persona with the West, and with the Asian threatening an invasion.
The most striking aspect of “The Sword with no Name” is that it is stylistically quite an odd mix. At nowadays administrator Kim goes with a wholly naturalistic style, which though not feat quite so far as to state modern shaky handheld camera techniques does makes the transactions see a lot less grownup than another arts dramas. The Sword with no Name fact that these scenes mostly occur when the characters are outside, and in portion when Moo Myeong and Ja Yeong are together and away from the confines of the court, not only adds a contact of realism, but quite neatly underscores the nuances of their relationship. This helps draw the viewer into The Sword with no Name's story, making things more lively and contrasting with whatever of the more formal costume and ordered based sequences. The flick is actually quite poetic and bonny in places, with whatever of its more quiet and protective scenes existence gently effective.
At another nowadays the flick goes all in the another direction and leaps headlong into CGI, with whatever completely over the top “Hero” like combat scenes, filled with andante motion, machine enhanced flight and blow music. These fights verify locate for no apparent reason against different vision backgrounds, with the characters suddenly transported to vast blue icy lakes, where fish and butterflies fly finished their sword strokes. Although the choreography features a bit likewise much in the way of alacritous editing and the flick resembles “The Storm Riders” in a few places, this is all quite beatific fun, and the battles do support to ready things moving along at a beatific pace. Whilst this may good like a disorganised mix, it actually works quite well, and though the flick is perhaps not necessarily logical in terms of approach, it is visually impressive, and to an extent enjoys the best of both worlds, existence alternately grounded and glossy.
The Sword with no Name also benefits from its fascinating arts context and back story, existence epic in orbit and covering such a key punctuation in engaging and interesting fashion. There is plenty in the way of politics, deception and intrigue, and the news is pleasingly material when it needs to be. Kim manages a beatific balance between character and more dramatic narrative, which helps to distract from the fact that there is essentially nothing newborn here. Certainly, the whole Emperor and bodyguard fuck tale has been told many nowadays before, and presented the film’s factual grounding, its success is famous from the start. Still, Emperor Myeongseong remains a complex and compelling figure, with Soo Ae turning in an excellent performance, anchoring, though not dominating the film. Her relation with Moo Myeong is all the better for not existence likewise romantic or clichéd, and this helps to ready things believable. Given the tragedy of the film’s climatic events, it does get rather sad and depressing, though thankfully not in likewise melodramatic a manner.
In this likewise The Sword with no Name is a successful balancing act, and is digit of the few arts epics to chisel intimate and wider, domestic concerns, existence at erst the news of a land and of digit grouping in love. Featuring action, intrigue and romance, it breathes a contact of newborn life into a familiar news by existence heartfelt, passionate and by mixing a traditional approach to the arts costume drama with something a lowercase more exciting.
